Health Risks After a House Fire

Health Risks After a House Fire

A house fire is the absolute nightmare of homeowners everywhere. Even though you can replace your things and rebuild your home, there are still many medical problems that pose a threat. Here are four health risks after a house fire that you must be prepared to overcome.

Smoke Inhalation

Smoke inhalation is a severe threat to your health. Over half of all deaths resulting from fires are due to smoke inhalation. Victims of smoke inhalation often exhibit many different symptoms, including coughing, shortness of breath, headache, eye irritation, skin discoloration, and chest pain. If you experience any of these conditions after escaping a fire, visit a medical professional as soon as possible.

Home Hazards

When you are finally allowed back into your home, it can be overwhelming to see all the damage. But you must remember that your house may no longer be safe. You should complete an inspection of your home and have all the restoration work completed by licensed professionals. This includes restoring all of your utilities and roof.

Dangers of Soot

Even after you rebuild your home, soot may come back to further damage your immune system. Airborne soot particles are practically invisible, so you could be exposed to it without knowing. Toxic particles released by a fire can linger in the air long after the blaze dies out. Some of these toxic particles are carcinogens that must always be avoided.

Mental Health Concerns

Long after the fire is out and your home is restored, it is still common for many survivors to carry mental scars because of the inferno. You may experience many of the same emotions that come from other forms of trauma, such as shock, anger, and depression. If there are children in the home, be alert for the signs in children, such as increased anxiety, sudden nightmares, and sleep disorders. And remember that it is not a sign of weakness to reach out for help if you are experiencing these or any other symptoms resulting from the health risks after a house fire.
