Gary Career Center Students Serve Railcats Gala Baseball Team

Gary Career Center Cooks for Railcats Gala

by Becky Mateja Lombardini
Greeted by goodie bags, dj, and servers with shrimp cocktail/deviled eggs, and people galore, the hospitality suite was buzzing.  Is that prime rib, chefs salad, balsamic capresi–keto bandito!  And next to a cake display with vanilla cream cupcakes was a full service drink station with a specialty greenish drink–Batter Up.  A five star restaurant event you might think.  Well it was a 5 star event, the Rail Cats Pre Season 2022-Meet and Greet, with catering from the Gary Area Career Center students orchestrated by Chef.

The school in Gary located at 1800 E 35th Ave, Gary, Indiana is the oldest trade facility in NWI.  Programs offered include auto, barber, heath science, cosmetology, culinary, early childhood ed, graphic design, and welding.  The Gary Area Career Center (GACC) can be part of any Northwest Indiana high school curriculum. The education one will find inside the doors of GACC will hook your passion with an education that will open your opportunities for a good paying job – directly out of high school!

Classes are taught in a work-like environment with hands-on activities from teachers who have worked in industry and are passionate about their area. Or if you want to continue your education to college – the classes can help you accomplish that too! All classes at GACC are dual credit, which means you are earning high school credit at the same time you are earning transcripted college credit.

Renee Connelly, PR for the Rail Cats, explained how the students were able to be there that night.  In part they procured a grant that was able to compensate for the work the school provided.  The Rail Cats also employ Gary students during the season.  “I just love these kids, it’s special for both of us.  We thoroughly enjoy having them,” said Connelly.

The Rail Cats kick off the season May 20th, 2022.  Please watch the video on Youtube with Salvi Sports President Brian Lyter, new Coach Lamarr Rogers, and all the players. Discussion of special events, Rusty the Rail Cat, and exposition softball were a few topics.  Plus lots more on the horizon for this city of Gary on Lake Michigan, ie meetings for Gary International Airport continue.
