Although newcomer Jennifer Ruth Green won in Porter County and also LaPorte County, Frank Mrvan’s long history of service in Lake County tipped him over the top, serving as North Township Trustee for 16 years, and leaving that position to run for office as Representative in 2021. Lake County had a higher voter turnout of 36.85%.
Mrvan took 52.8% of the vote with Green gaining 47.2% of the vote with 92% reported. Lake County is the largest county in the District 1 area. Both Candidates ran heavy negative campaigns, but Mrvan focused on the abortion issue, steel workers’ issue, and manufacturing jobs.
Lake County has 364,925 registered voters, Porter County has 131,660 registered voters and LaPorte County has 78,377 registered voters.*
Green is a newcomer in politics, whereas Frank has spent a lifetime building relationships with the people of Lake County on an individual basis. Green is from Crown Point, which is the southern portion of Lake County, whereas the North Township Trustee’s Office serves the northern portion of Lake County Including the large cities of Hammond, Gary and East Chicago.
Frank Mrvan also had the backing of the Steelworkers, the Laborers, the IBEW, and all the building trades. Their long time volunteers helped knock on doors, make phone calls and spread word of mouth which helped Mrvan prevail. Frank Mrvan’s father was in community service, serving as Indiana Senator, and has influenced Mrvan to spend his entire life in community service.
This was also one of the most expensive campaigns in District 1 of Northwest Indiana history. Green spent upwards of 10 million dollars with the help of the GOP who wanted to show a diverse party. Even though the first district has been Democratic for 90 years, the GOP thought they had a chance in 2022, due to the decline in manufacturing and re-districting.
Mrvan’s campaign ran on bringing in funding for Northwest Indiana to the South Shore Line Double Track expansion, public safety, education and the American Rescue plan.
