New this winter, the public is invited to become a member of “Mrs. Barker’s Club” which pays tribute to Katherine Barker’s involvement in planning the mansion’s menus and parties. Katherine was the wife of freight car industrialist John H. Barker and lived at the mansion until her death in 1910.
Mrs. Barker’s Club will meet four times over the winter and each session will feature one dry soup or bread mix that members will assemble in mason jars. Additionally, each week will feature a craft project, with the idea that the recipe and craft could inspire a meal or party at home. Meeting dates are January 21 and 28 and February 4 and 11th from 7-8:30 pm. Refreshments will be served each week.
The menu includes mixes for cream of chicken and potato soups and cornbread and chocolate chip banana bread. Scheduled craft activities are tea cup candles and potted herbs and painted vases and spoons.
Mrs. Barker’s Club will serve as a fundraiser for the mansion. A fee of $100 per adult and $90 per child under 18 applies; the fee covers all four sessions. Advance registration and payment is required by calling (219) 873-1520 x 4; the deadline is January 18. A minimum of ten participants must be met in order for the club to be launched.
