UCA Ride and Rail Tour- There IS Something to Do this Summer!
For everyone who has said “Gee, I wish there was something fun to do,” we have great news. The 3rd Annual Ride and Rail Tour will kick off from Downtown Whiting on Saturday, July 25th, 2020 promptly at 9a.m., returning shortly after 1p.m. This annual event celebrates our closeness to Chicago, our magnificent local bike trails, the convenience of the South Shore Railroad, and even gives riders a free commemorative shirt and movie ticket to the iconic bicycling movie, “Breaking Away” at the Hoosier Theater.
What’s more, many local restaurants and stores are providing riders with special discount coupons, so after burning off some calories, you can replenish the loss! All for a cost of only $25.00, including the train and movie tickets. The event is organized by the United Citizens Association (the group that does the hanging baskets on 119th Street in Robertsdale), the Hammond Port Authority, the City of Hammond, Region Signs and the Hoosier Theater.
Think about it. You ride your bicycle (this is a ride and NOT a race) to Downtown Chicago, and then get to sit back and ride the train back- it’s like having your own magic carpet. The total ride is about 25 miles, 20 to downtown and just under 5 miles back from the South Shore Station to Downtown Whiting. And for those of you who are wondering about social distancing, well, that is very easy for those who ride bikes. If you are closer than 6 feet from another rider, you will probably have an accident!
If you are interested, you need to register on Active.com at: https://www.active.com/whiting-in/cycling/races/3rd-annual-ride-and-rail-bicycling-event-2020?int= as there is a strict limit of 300 riders, so reservations must be taken on a first come, first serve basis. For more information, call Tom Dabertin at 219 853-9782.
So, join the United Citizens Association, and event sponsors: the Hammond Port Authority, City of Hammond, City of Whiting, Region Signs, and the Hoosier Theater, in doing something that is fun, entertaining and relaxing. Oh, and did we say fun?
