Historic Community Center/YMCA Tour & City Sale Sept. 28
by Carl Zurbriggen
Join us on Saturday, September 28th to experience the history of the Whiting Family YMCA and former Whiting Community Center built by John D. Rockefeller!
Explore the facility like never before by taking a tour behind the scenes. Look and experience the 800 seat auditorium, gym, pool, Memorial Room, caretaker’s apartment, basement and underground tunnels.
Together the YMCA, City of Whiting, and knowledgeable volunteers Dave Dabertin, Frank Vargo, John Hmurovic, Ed Koch and Mark Harbin will share facts and stories about the building’s historical past. Photos will be featured that span back to the dedication of the building in 1923.
In addition, the City of Whiting will be holding an ‘Historic Flea Market’ giving guests the opportunity to take home a piece of history. Shop the many antique Whiting items such as historic street bricks, street signs, Whiting Park (WP) posts, original bowling lane pieces, etc. that will be placed for sale. All revenue generated from the sale will go toward to future City of Whiting Museum fund.
Tour times available at 10a.m.-11:50a.m. and Noon-1:50p.m. Space is limited. You must register in-person at the YMCA or at crymca.org.
Cost is $20/person. Proceeds benefit the YMCA Financial Assistance Program.
