Dunes Learning Center invites the public to celebrate National Get Outdoors Day at their Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore campus on Saturday, June 8, 2019.

The annual nationwide event aims to connect people with the great outdoors. Guests are invited to explore Dunes Learning Center’s Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore campus and take advantage of a variety of outdoor activities. Hikes, crafts, and demonstrations will be offered,

“This event is a great way for families to share a day outdoors and sample activities from Dunes Learning Center’s summer camp and school year programs,” said executive director, Geof Benson. “We hope that campers of all ages will share this special place with friends and family.”

Situated on 63 acres of rolling woodland along the Little Calumet River, Dunes Learning Center’s modern cabins and lodge are located on the site of the former Good Fellow Youth Camp. Guests will have the opportunity to find out about habitat restoration on campus, investigate life in the forest, check out what’s a-buzz in the pollinator garden and dip a net in the Little Calumet River to learn about water quality. They can also pull on a tree-climbing harness and ascend into the canopy with Davey® Tree Service, discover why some bugs are insects but not all insects are bugs with Franklin Pest Solutions, and get the latest details on local access plus safety tips with NWI Paddling Association. In between activities, guests can relax and enjoy live music on the lawn.

Dunes Learning Center’s Get Outdoors Day open house is made possible by premier sponsor ArcelorMittal, with additional support from Lakeshore Public Media, Lamar Advertising, BP, Enbridge, Friends of Indiana Dunes, NIPSCO, Mark J. Mihalo D.D.S Family Dentistry, and Republic Services. Arts activities made possible, in part, with support from the Indiana Arts Commission, South Shore Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m on Saturday, June 10th. Event admission is free. All ages welcome. Advance registration is required. For more information and to register, visit DunesLearningCenter.org/events.
