aul Henry’s Art Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibit, “I Paint With Wood,” which will feature the Intarsia artistry of Griffith, IN artist Chris Klocek.  We will open the exhibit with a two-day reception, Friday, April 22, 6pm til 9pm and Saturday, April 23, 2PM til 8PM. An artist talk is scheduled at 5pm during the Saturday reception.

The Saturday reception will include a talk by the artist at 5PM.

Intarsia is an ancient art form that brings shapes of wood or stone together to form an intricate design.

Klocek has been working in wood since 1985, concentrating on intarsia for over twenty years.  His designs are original and some are highly interpretive.  “These are the pieces I enjoy working on the most,” he says.

A wide range of the artist’s work will be on display. “The subjects determine whether the design will be realistic or impressionistic,” Klocek says. “Other than commissioned pieces, I choose my subjects from musicians, sports icons, and entertainment celebrities whom I admire.”

Each finished piece is initially cut from as many as a dozen different wood species, carefully sanded through multiple grits and then finished with two coats of hand rubbed clear varnish. No additional pigmentation is used beyond the natural color of the wood.

The parts of the composition are then assembled on a wood backing.
