Mark your calendar now for “Around the World in 1816” on Wednesday, November 16 at 7:30 pm.
The opening concert, “Around the World in 1816” offers listeners an historical musical context for Indiana’s inauguration as our 19th state. The Midwest Premiere of “Crystal Healing” by Gary Schocker will be featured. This work was written to commemorate the 200th year of a rare four-keyed crystal flute built by Claude Laurent in Paris. Fewer than 125 of these instruments are believed still in existence, with only 24 of those privately held. Debra is one of only three flutists in the world performing on a Laurent crystal flute. A duo sonata by G.P.A. Gatayes, close friend of the infamous Jean-Paul Marat will also be performed on this important historic instrument.
Other early Romantic period works on the November program include a suite of opera excerpts from Rossini’s “Barber of Seville” in an original early 19th century arrangement by Philip Ernst and a truly virtuosic Mauro Giuliani duo sonata. Joan Tower, a Grammy-winning contemporary American composer, will be represented with her “Snow Dreams,” to pay homage to 1816 as the globally catastrophic “year without a summer.”
