Join rangers at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore for an afternoon of exploring our historic homesteads from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Meet at 1 pm in the Bailly / Chellberg parking lot for an informative 90-minute hike to the Bailly Cemetery.
It is the oldest white burial ground in Porter County. It has been recorded that Joseph Bailly buried his son, Napoleon B. “Robert” Bailly, here in 1827. It has also been recorded that Native Americans first used the site for the burial of their dead.
Though skeletons have been uncovered at the cemetery site on numerous occasions, they have always been reburied without a determination of their race. Hence, it has not been conclusively determined whether the Bailly Cemetery was originally a sacred Indian burial ground.
After the hike, explore the interiors of both historic homes and homesteads from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm. Learn about early settlers and farmers who came to this region in the 1800s. Be sure to bring the kids at 4:00 pm to help feed the farm animals at Chellberg Farm.
The Bailly Homestead / Chellberg Farm main parking lot is located on Mineral Springs Road between U.S. Highway 20 and U.S. Highway 12 in Porter, Indiana.
