What is Arbor Day?
Arbor Day is an annual observance that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. As a formal holiday, it was first observed in 1872 in Nebraska, but tree planting celebrations are as old as civilization. Arbor Day was founded by Julius Sterling Morton who served as Secretary of Agriculture under President Grover Cleveland. His son, Joy Sterling Morton, is the founder of Morton Salt Company and established the Morton Arboretum located in Lisle, IL in 1922.
