The state’s largest public transit investments in Indiana history begins its first major phase of construction – adding a second track and station improvements along a 26.6-mile corridor of the South Shore Line Railroad from Gary to Michigan City for 25 miles.
The Double Track Project is designed to improve operating flexibility and reliability, reduce delays and travel times, improve safety, and promote economic development opportunities in the Region.
Major construction work will begin in Michigan City on the eastern end at 11th Street and Michigan Blvd., and move westward, according to Walsh/Herzog Joint Venture, the entity handling the largest construction contract.
“The project bids came in higher than expected in May 2021, and the project was re-bid in an effort to drive the cost back down,” said Michael Noland, NICTD President. “Part of the effort to drive down costs was to reevaluate construction phasing, including how the contractor would access the complex area on 11th Street in Michigan City,” he added.
According to Noland, the original construction duration for Michigan City was two years. The re-bid project’s revised approach requires closing 11th Street during construction in order to drive the total construction duration down to 9 months. “This is a significant improvement for Michigan City residents,” Noland stated.
Construction on 11th Street begins Monday, February 28, 2022. The project provides weekly updates to Mayor Parry and city staff including police, fire and county emergency response
teams, to ensure everyone is prepared for upcoming work.
