Canterbury Summer Theatre presents its final show of the 2022 season, Sylvia, a comic fantasy, performing August 4-6, with no Wednesday matinee for this production. (Michael Schutza as Greg, Sarah Foster as Sylvia the dog and Aubrey Brummett as Kate, pictured from left,)
Written by A. R. Gurney, the play concerns Greg, a middle-aged married man feeling increasingly isolated from his wife, who finds a dog, Sylvia, in the park and decides to bring her home. The dog, who is played by an actress, can speak and understand him. As Greg spends more time with Sylvia, the friendship creates friction with his spouse, but ultimately, causes a positive effect on their marriage.
The play premiered Off-Broadway in 1995 with Sarah Jessica Parker as Sylvia and received its Broadway debut in 2015 starring Matthew Broderick and Annaleigh Ashford.
Sylvia is produced in association with Bossier Parish Community College in Louisiana, as part of its two-decade relationship with Canterbury. The play will open in Michigan City and continue its run in Shreveport later in the month.
