On November 6th, 2020, Indiana Historic Preservation will Award the Decay Devils, Inc. in recognition of its outstanding grassroots efforts to preserve the historic Union Station downtown Gary, Indiana. Decay Devils was informally founded in 2011 and became a certified non-profit organization in 2015.
While supporting many Northwest Indiana projects, Decay Devils has focused its efforts on Gary Union Station, a 1910 Beaux Arts building that has been vacant since the 1970s. To transform the area, Decay Devils worked with local artists to create murals in open window spaces and hosted clean up/work days to help create a safe park-like area around the building. Decay Devils has also hosted downtown walking/biking tours, art exhibits, and successfully nominated the Union Station to the National Register in 2019.
Currently, Union Station is an unoccupied building with over 4,000 square feet of space – not including the land it sits on. Decay Devils, intends to fully rehabilitate this structure and its grounds to improve economic development and foster positive social interactions within the city of Gary.
This space will include a historical element, vendor/community retail space, and art gallery. The stairs leading to the second floor will contain a seating area for guests to rest before entering the enclosed platform area. The restoration of Union Station will also add much-needed value to the downtown neighborhood. Residents and visitors will enjoy a safe space to interact over food, spirits, craft beer, coffee, art, and much more.
The Decay Devils are completing a capital campaign (Union Station’s first-ever) with a goal of raising $2.0 million to help make this exciting project – mixed-use / community space, dining, and new administrative office space – a reality. When completed we will be a hub of innovation, creation and interaction for the Gary community. The project will be funded by a combination of private philanthropy, grants, and short-term financing.
Based out of Northwest Indiana, the Decay Devils have gone from playing in to actively restoring abandoned buildings. Through their travels, they’ve discovered that some of Earth’s greatest treasures are in danger of being reclaimed by nature. They aim to protect and restore these monuments with our preservation efforts, but they cannot achieve their goals alone. Preserving history takes linked hands, charitable donations, and a shared vision. Learn more about the Decay Devils and find out how you can help with our landmark preservation efforts.
