U.S. Congressman Frank Mrvan (D, CD1) has joined Republican Art Elwood in endorsing Hannah Trueblood’s candidacy for Valparaiso mayor.
“Hannah Trueblood’s passionate commitment to her community drives her desire to seek public office. Her initiative to build upon the quality of life and place that makes Valparaiso an attractive place to live, to work, and to visit has my support as we work together to invest in Northwest Indiana’s future.” Mrvan said in a statement.
Elwood, a lifelong Republican and former city council member who ran for the mayoral nomination in the Republican primary said he, too, was inspired by Trueblood’s commitment to community, but it was her knowledge and integrity that led him to publicly support her campaign. “I knew she was a strong, pragmatic woman. I see her values, her strength, and her courage, and I know she can be a powerful mayor for the people, for all the people,” he said.
Elwood said “I’ve seen city hall full of people who didn’t want something in their neighborhood, and when it came to a vote, the developer won. Hannah will be the mayor who takes time to listen and make a decision for what’s best for Valpo, not just for a campaign donor.”
Hannah Trueblood is the first woman to run for mayor in Valparaiso, a fact not lost on the Congressman. Mrvan appreciated the fact that Trueblood didn’t wait for permission from anyone to run, given how those in power often tell barrier breakers to “wait their turn.” Mrvan’s father, recently retired State Senator Frank Mrvan Sr, had often told his son that “it’s never going to be your turn. You have to make it your turn.”
Hannah Trueblood is pleased about these bi-partisan endorsements. “Valparaiso isn’t a red city or a blue city,” she paraphrased Pres. Obama. “It is a purple city with diverse viewpoints that deserve to be heard. Not all Democratic ideas are automatically good and not all Republican ideas are necessarily bad. We are all Valpo.”
