Easy access to fresh water, which is easily our most precious and often misused resource, is a luxury many people take for granted without realizing it. Most of us aren’t taught early on how miraculous it is for us to have supplies of clean water ready to go whenever we want. Nowadays, people are beginning to understand the reality of water scarcity and trying to tone down their usage wherever possible. There are still a few common habits people have that waste too much water that you should know of if you’d like to help.
Flushing Without Thinking
Flushing a toilet uses a lot more water than many people realize. Some toilets use gallons of clean water every time they flush. Extrapolate that to how many times a day every home in a given country flushes their toilets, and you have a staggering amount of water loss. For sanitary purposes, you shouldn’t feel bad about flushing your toilet, but flushing any random thing just so you don’t have to think about it is bad for your pipes and, more importantly, bad for the environment.
Taking Very Long Showers
Look at your showerhead the next time you take a shower and try to imagine how much water is pouring out every second. You’ll start to see how extended showers can waste a ton of water over time. If you want to reduce your water consumption, you can reduce the time it takes to shower or switch to a more efficient showerhead. It’s an easy change you can make that will save gallons upon gallons of water over a long time.
Hose Washing Vehicles
There’s no need to use a ton of water if you want to clean your car. Yet, plenty of people leave their hoses running throughout the entire process. If you want to clean your vehicle by hand, you’re better off filling up a bucket with water and using that instead of constantly using your hose. Hoses can run through gallons of water in mere minutes if you leave them on for an extended period.
Wasting Water in the Kitchen
One common habit people have that wastes a lot of water is not paying attention to all the water they use in the kitchen. It’s understandable to want to wash your produce, but you don’t need constantly running water to do so. You can use a bowl filled with water much more efficiently. If you still want to use running water for cleaning, try to collect that water and use it for watering plants or gardens instead of letting it slip down the drain.
