Off-roading is an incredibly popular sport, which means there are hundreds of companies selling thousands of products to make it better, safer, and more exciting. Though you can go to lengths to elevate your off-roading vehicle, you don’t need a million bells and whistles. If you’re more interested in keeping things simple, we’re here to help. Read on as we go back to basics and reveal the bare bones of off-roading equipment for a safe, fun adventure every time.
1. Tires Built for Tough Terrain
Your tires are probably the most critical piece of equipment. Without the right ones, even the most capable vehicle will struggle to overcome bumpy, rocky, muddy, or sandy terrain. All-terrain (AT) or mud-terrain (MT) tires are your go-to options.
- AT tires are great for a mix of paved roads and trails.
- MT tires are designed for deep mud and loose rocks.
Whichever type you choose, you should deflate your tires a bit before hitting sand or soft terrain. It improves grip and helps you glide rather than sink. Just remember to bring a tire pressure gauge and a portable air compressor to reinflate before returning to the highway.
2. Recovery Gear
There’s some pretty fancy recovery equipment on the market nowadays, but you probably don’t need it. There’s some basic recovery gear you should get before investing in an electric winch and other fancy devices. For instance, recovery straps are simple tools that will help you pull your vehicle out of tricky spots. Traction boards are another affordable, practical favorite; they help your tires regain grip for a quick escape from sand, snow, or mud.
3. Tools for Minor Repairs
Mechanical issues can happen anywhere. On an off-road trail, a basic toolkit can be the difference between getting home or staying stranded. Bring along pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, a multi-tool, and a tire repair kit. These should cover most minor repairs.
4. Navigation and Communication Devices
It’s easy to lose your way in unmarked trails. When cell reception drops, you want and need reliable navigation and communication. A GPS specifically designed for off-roading and a two-way radio are essential devices for your off-roading adventures.
5. First Aid Kit
No adventure gear setup is complete without a first aid kit. You might get some cuts and bruises on the trails, so make sure you can patch up and disinfect minor injuries.
Keep It Simple and Safe
Off-roading doesn’t have to mean packing your vehicle with gear that could rival a hardware store. Go back to basics by focusing on the bare bones of off-roading equipment, and you’ll cover your core needs for exploration, safety, and recovery. Happy trailblazing!
