“A Christmas Carol” Holiday Favorite Returns to 4th Street Theater

What started out as Grant Fitch’s love of reading out loud has developed a one-man adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” that has been going for more than two decades. Grant Fitch, an award-winning local actor, and professional storyteller will perform his one-man version of the Dickens tale for four performances on the 4th Street stage. Now in his 21st year of performing this timeless story, 4th Street Theater in Chesterton proudly presents Grant Fitch in the Charles Dickens holiday classic “A Christmas Carol.”
This family favorite kicks of the holiday season on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 7:00 pm, Sunday, November 26, 2023 at 3:00 pm, Saturday, December 2 at 7:00 pm, 2023 and Saturday December 9, at 8:00pm.
Fitch plays the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge and more than 30 other characters including Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, Marley’s Ghost and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future in “A Christmas Carol.” Fitch cleverly brings all the characters vividly to life. You’ll Meet the lovable Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim, as well as the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge along with Marley’s Ghost and the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Even if you’re familiar with the many screen versions, Fitch includes scenes from the original novella rarely depicted on film.
“I’ve always enjoyed reading aloud, performing, and doing voices and stuff, so you really feel it,” said Fitch, of Dyer.
“In 1997, I’d been working for a while as a children’s librarian in Lansing, IL. I wanted to do something for families. I thought of doing a reading of ‘A Christmas Carol.’ I’d seen it done a couple of times by actors I held in esteem,” stated Fitch. But, when he left the library, people kept asking him to do his dramatic readings.
As a matter of fact, Charles Dickens himself used to go on tour and perform his own works and Fitch learned that ‘A Christmas Carol’ was one of the big ones. So over the years, he has honed his own adaptation of the text as a dramatic reading. He had no idea it would develop into what it has become today. Twenty odd years later he’s still doing this story and it’s grown from just a reading to a memorized performance where he plays all the characters.
Today, as a professional storyteller, Fitch brings picture books and silly stories to school kids, and gives dramatic readings of the works of authors from Mark Twain to Edgar Allan Poe. Fitch, who presents programs for all ages through “Stories for Life.” He has been acting on area stages for nearly as long as he’s been storytelling. He has starred in, among others, “The Foreigner.” “My Fair Lady,” “Same Time, Next Year,” “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” and “The Drowsy Chaperone.”
